Central Coast bariatric surgeon Dr. David Thoman of Advanced Surgical Associates of Santa Barbara (http://www.sbmis.com) is now offering a minimally-invasive approach to weight loss surgery for Fresno area patients. The revolutionary technique, known as the SILS procedure, allows Dr. Thoman to operate using a single incision through the belly button, rather than the standard 3 or 4 half-inch incisions required for most laparoscopic surgeries.
"The SILS technique streamlines the surgical process through a single point of entry, thereby eliminating many of the traditional scar patterns associated with weight loss surgery," Dr. Thoman says. "A single-incision approach enables my bariatric surgery patients in Fresno and elsewhere to receive the same level of care while enjoying a better cosmetic result."
Dr. Thoman specializes in minimally-invasive laparoscopic gastrointestinal and weight loss surgery, including the LAP-BAND

Healthy Travel Media and Monterrey Healthcare City (MHC) are pleased to announce Patients Beyond Borders: Monterrey Edition, to be published in English for international distribution in February of 2011.
Supported by the leading healthcare facilities of Monterrey, Mexico, the Patients Beyond Borders® research and editorial team worked with MHC to produce this 144-page, fully digital guidebook, which offers an in-depth overview of Monterrey’s leading American-accredited hospitals, selected health travel agents, accommodations, and essential medical travel information for the international patient.
Monterrey now boasts four JCI-accredited hospitals within its city limits—half the JCI hospitals in Mexico—plus an array of private international specialty hospitals and clinics. Readers will learn about Monterrey’s commitment to healthcare (including three first-rate medical schools: Tecnologico de Monterrey, Universidad de Monterrey, and the new Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon) and why thousands of medical travelers are making the short trip across the border to Monterrey for medical procedures, including cosmetic surgery, dentistry, bariatrics/weight management, IVF/reproductive services, orthopedics, cardiology, cancer treatments, and more.
“We are so pleased to be partnering with Healthy Travel Media to produce and distribute Patients Beyond Borders: Monterrey Edition,” says Dr. Jesus Horacio Gonzalez Treviño, medical services director of Clínica Vitro and president of the Monterrey Healthcare City Association. “With medical specialties and procedures at 30–70% savings compared to US prices, coupled with easy access from North America, we are not surprised to see that Monterrey has become the choice of many seeking quality, affordable international healthcare closer to home.”
In addition to comprehensive checklists showing “How to Become a Savvy, Informed Medical Traveler,” readers receive detailed guidance on budgeting and planning for a medical journey; thorough profiles, including specialties and centers of excellence, of fully accredited Mexican hospitals catering to the international patient; and visitor and sightseeing information on the region, with maps, illustrations, and 24 pages of color inserts showcasing Monterrey’s world-class facilities and attractions. Electronic versions will be available through retail outlets worldwide, Amazon and other online retailers, and MHC.
The new Patients Beyond Borders series of City Editions allows a healthcare cluster (a group of medical facilities within a closely knit geographical area) to focus industry and consumer attention on the unique attributes of its medical infrastructure, leading facilities, and educational and research offerings. PBB City Editions are distributed digitally and in print throughout the world, as well as to selected regions served by that cluster. If your hospital or clinic is part of a healthcare cluster, please contact Judy Orchard, jorchard@healthtraveler.net, to learn more about this unique opportunity to increase your visibility and reach to international healthcare consumers.

As the complexity of the healthcare system increases, the role of case managers becomes even more significant, according to the Case Management Society of America. During National Case Management Week, Oct. 10-16, 2010, the CMSA and other organizations, including Allsup, are helping to increase awareness about the crucial care-giving role played by case managers in the medical community. Allsup is a nationwide provider of Social Security disability representation and Medicare plan selection services.
Case managers provide support to patients and families navigating the healthcare system, they also help decrease the fragmentation of services and encourage communication among health professionals on a patient’s team of care providers. The CMSA is emphasizing this year’s theme, “One Passion…One Goal…Many Talents: Case Management is the Critical Connection to Optimal Health Care.”
Case managers devote hours of time, plus expertise and dedication to supporting individuals, family members and caregivers who seek their help and intervention. In turn, CMSA helps support case managers with a variety of tools and resources, including its newly revised 2010 Standards of Practice issued earlier this year. The organization also provides its “Senior Service Finder” with a database of 60,000 senior housing facilities and home healthcare providers nationwide.
As the healthcare industry continues to grow in complexity, the CMSA is committed to advancing case managers’ profession, emphasizing professional standards, integrity and quality care.
The week of Oct. 10-16 provides an opportunity to recognize and celebrate case managers’ involvement and instrumental role in providing quality healthcare to patients nationwide. Nationally, case management professionals work in a variety of settings, including government agencies, long-term care facilities, insurance and health maintenance organizations, nonprofits, rehabilitation facilities and other settings.
Allsup is saluting case management professionals during National Case Management Week with free posters available to case managers, clinics and other community groups by calling Karen Hercules-Doerr at (800) 854-1418, ext. 5770.

How are bathrooms structured for long-term patients in hospitals?
I'm writing a story where two temporalily homless people try to sneak into a hospital to shower. I'm trying to figure out the actual layout of the bathrooms, where they're located, and their facilities so I can write the scene accurately.
