Green Home Building: Build Home Solar Power Systems

Its a great thing that many people have gotten interested in solar home building, however many people feel that's really expensive and out of their price range.  If you do it in the traditional way where you hire the professionals to build and install the solar power to your home, then it can get quite expensive. However, if you do it all yourself, you can save thousands of dollars for solar home building.

The real problem is that most people have a hard time getting around this idea that they can do it all by themselves.

The tough part is actually finding a step by step process that can take you by the hand, no matter how handy you may or may not be, and show you how its done.  That's what I needed, and that's what I found.

With the book that I read I was able to being my process of solar home building.  Now, I have taken my electricity bill and have trimmed it off by 70% since I began.  I should be completely off the grid, in a few months from now.  As you could imagine, I am very excited about this.

Not only have does this make financial sense, but it makes just as much sense from an environmental perspective.  With our society finally getting more green conscious, we need to start taking steps towards alternative energy.  There is nothing that will make a better statement than your neighbors seeing you build your very own solar panels.  After my neighbor saw me building my first panel, he became hooked.

That's how it all starts.  People need to see other people taking action, and next thing you know, half the neighborhood has solar panels in their home.

Summerville, SC (PRWEB) June 5, 2009

Aeonian Brick Homes (http://Aeonianbricks.com) is announcing today that construction of the first home utilizing their new home building system should be completed by the end of summer, 2009. Aeonian is building a single family home using its exclusive waterproof, interlocking brick that can withstand hurricane and tornado winds up to 240 miles per hour.

A home that will protect and provide safety to the homeowner and family members, while saving vast amounts of energy, and being one of the greenest homes ever built.

The bricks in these homes will not burn or crack and will not support the growth of mold and mildew. This home will be termite and insect- proof, and have 15 times more insulating value than concrete blocks, reducing home heating and cooling cost by 50%.

Don Blalock, Founder of Aeonian Brick Homes, LLC, has been involved in the research and development of this new brick for the past six years. The bricks will be sold to home builders and contractors throughout the United States as part of a complete home building system, which will include a new roofing system, with the same advantages as the walls.

Brick production began on May 14, 2009 in the company's Summerville, SC factory. The company has purchased a lot in The Ponds, a community located in historical Summerville to build the first home using this revolutionary home building system.

Columbus, OH (PRWEB) January 15, 2008

Dominion Homes™, a leading central Ohio homebuilder, is using environmentally friendly green building techniques in building new homes. Dominion Home's environmentally responsible products and building specifications are designed to help home buyers make eco-friendly decisions.

"From increasing energy efficiency to reducing dependence on natural resources, living green is easier than you think and can actually save you money," said Douglas G. Borror, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Ohio-based new home builder.

According to Borror, Dominion Homes now offers a variety of green building alternatives in its new homes. The most popular include:

Nu-Wool® Insulation, a naturally green product that uses up to 40% less energy than conventionally insulated homes. Made from 100% recycled fibers, Nu-Wool is environmentally friendly. Nu-Wool processes over 150 tons of recycled paper each business day – that's the equivalent of 2,550 trees per day! Nu-Wool homes are also quieter inside because the density deadens noise significantly.
Green Guard House Wrap GreenGuard® RainDrop.™ Housewrap utilizes moisture management technology that acts as water barrier diverting bulk water straight down channels to the base of exterior wall. This house wrap has threads in it that create an air gap, allowing air to flow behind the siding so that humidity can escape.
Engineered floor trusses and wood products like oriented strand board that do not require large, old trees for their manufacture. Both products are resource efficient and enhance durability.
Shaw® Carpet, a fashionable and responsible carpet choice. Without losing durability or aesthetics, Shaw Industry's recycled carpet program eliminates 300 million pounds of landfill waster every year.
Energy Star® appliances, which consume less energy than standard appliances.
Roof coverings that are more durable reduce the frequency of roof replacement. Dominion's dimensional Elk® shingles come with a 30-year warranty.
Water saving toilets and faucets that cut down on water consumption and save on usage costs.
Aristokraft® cabinets. Aristokraft is aligned with the National Association of Home Builders' Green Home Building Guidelines that employ the use of environmentally responsible materials in cabinet products and minimize the environmental impact by recycling wastes and using low emission coatings.

"We are proud to offer our new home buyers environmentally conscious home building choices. Dominion Homes is dedicated to providing green construction initiatives and cost-effective and energy-saving features with all our new home builds," Borror added.

Dominion Home's green alternatives are now available with all new home contracts. For additional information on Dominion Home's green building programs and environmentally responsible home building initiatives visit www.DominionHomes.com.

How To Go Green With Home Building Materials

Home building materials need not cost the earth. Going green with home building materials simply means using timber and other products that have been recycled. In fact, just because other people have thrown it out does not mean that there is anything wrong with it. They may simply be renovating and have decided to change from one product to another.

And it is not only from home renovations that such timber and other building materials can be sourced. Construction sites have quite a bit of waste that is thrown into the dumpster and taken out to go into landfill at the local tip. This is timber, tiles and many other building materials that have been over-ordered and are now excess to the job in hand. Builders usually over order so that there will be no problems with replacing things such as tiles that may get broken. Very often it is impossible to get an exact match, so over-ordering is considered cheaper than having to throw the lot away because you were a few tiles short.

Timber excess sometimes comes from off-cuts but often you can also get full lengths of timber that are ideal for the home handyman. There is excess here because builders buy timber in set amounts and even if they only use half of it, the full amount must be purchased.

Using home building materials from recycled sources means that the earth's resources have been saved. It is not only the trees that now don't need to be cut down, but the fuel and cost of cutting them up and transporting them that has been saved.

Mel writes about home building materials among other automotive related topics.

Peak Moment 119: Builder and author Shay Salomon finds that the happiest home builders are often the ones with the smallest houses. They're less costly to build and maintain, more likely to be finished, use fewer resources and help people simplify their lives. One version of "smaller" is to share a house, which can ease our loneliness while building our social network. Co-founder of the Small House Society, Shay notes that scaling down can enable a ratcheting up of our whole lifestyle, as we revalue quality over quantity. Declaring "Enough", she says, is the most ecological thing one can do. [ www.littlehouseonasmallplanet.com ]

Green House Floor Plan | Build An Energy Efficient Home

When planning your new house, an energy efficient green house floor plan would be an excellent alternative to a traditional stick built home. One improtant thing to consider is the orientation of your home on the property. One way to gain energy savings is to situate the house toward the northwest and use fewer openings and heavier walls on that side.

The house should open up to the southeast in order to take advantage of solar heat. Use louvers to block harsh summer sun angles and also allow weak angled winter warmth. With a southeast orientation, the slope of the main roof should face southwest with solar panels placed on that side.

Another way to save money is in the configuration and construction of the house. Heavy mass should be used on the north or northwest side in a green house floor plan to block the winter cold. It also is an efficient way to run plumbing and HVAC. The roof may be designed to collect rainwater in large barrels or cisterns which will cut down on city water costs.

The interior of a green house floor plan should be open and spacious to allow for natural airflow from open windows and stragically placed panels. This type of design cuts down on the need for air conditioning by making use of wind currents to bring fresh air into the home. Pick out the most energy efficient doors and window you can afford since they will provide an excellent return on you investment in lower energy bills month after month.

The true beauty of a green house floor plan is the ability to live "off the grid" with only a few extra features. A combination of features such as rain water collection, gray water reuse, solar panels and wind power with battery back up will afford a better lifestyle that is also easier on Mother Nature. With careful design and planning you can make your new home easier on the environment with a green house floor plan.

Rebecca Welch is a successful webmaster and publisher of BuyHousePlansOnline.com. She provides researched information on house floor plan styles.

Zero Energy Design® coined the term "Thermal Buffer Zone" in the materials about our first ZED home in 1979. It is the extremely efficient concept that two small temperature differentials result in lower undesirable heat transfer than one large exterior envelope temperature differential. Since 1979, "TBZ" has appeared in popular architecture literature many times, but most Architects(R) still do not understand how to use it cost effectively in a zero energy building. This narrated video shows a beautiful, open, efficient, abundant-daylight floor plan, and how our refined Double Shell Thermal Buffer Zone transfers solar gain from the sunny side of the home, to the cold side of a Zero Energy Design building with NO electricity. We also describe summer Energy Recovery Ventilation solar cooling, and how we hide all solar panels and satelite dishes from view on all sides. Nancy Banchik Scottsdale & Phoenix Arizona Realtor

Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) June 29, 2010

Scottsdale has been ranked among the greenest cities in the United States by the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) based on their Smarter Cities project’s findings. Ranked 9th in the medium cities category, Scottsdale’s robust green building program is one of the reasons why it’s on the list, reports Green Realtor Nancy Banchik.

“Scottsdale has seen an increase in green building activity over the past decade,” says Banchik, “and the Phoenix metro area as a whole is becoming greener every year.” In 2009, there were 121 single-family home building permits issued in Scottsdale and 30 of these were for green homes. Many of the newer Scottsdale, Arizona homes for sale on the market today are green.

The NRDC Scottsdale’s voluntary green building program, its wastewater reclamation system, and its successful wildlife, habitat and open space preservation efforts – particularly the creation of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in the mid-90s. Phoenix is also slated to put more environmentally-friendly measures in place. In a recent address, current mayor Phil Gordon announced a 27-point green plan aiming towards making Phoenix the country’s first carbon-neutral city.

“Scottsdale has been going green for years,” says Banchik, “and you can see the many positive effects this has had on the city’s quality of life, as well as on the housing stock. Scottsdale was actually the first city in the country to require all of its new city buildings to qualify for an LEED gold certification and there are more Scottsdale green homes for sale today than there have ever been before.”

Banchik has been active in the region’s real estate industry since 1988. Apart from holding a Green Designation, she has also earned the GRI, CRS, ABR, CNE, CSSN, and CDPE designations. For more information on Scottsdale and Phoenix green homes for sale, visit her site, www.NancyBanchik.com.

Innova Kitchens and Baths opens integrated Green Showroom / Design Office

When Innova Kitchens and Baths decided that it was time to move their showroom into the upscale Dunbar / Kerrisdale area of Vancouver, the challenge was to create a showroom which would demonstrate more functionality, incorporate green finishes, include an entire office, and do so in 1/5th the space.

With only about 500 square feet of functional space that could be dedicated to the showroom / design centre, this might have appeared as an impossibility to many.   However, with design skills earned by years in the industry, owner's Paul Coker and Lee Stergios set about doing just that.  As they do for clients project, Paul and Lee first started with a litany of requirements for both a state-of-the-art showroom as well as an efficient design office.  Then began the arduous task of creating and critiquing numerous designs looking at everything from form and functionality, to design aesthetic and finishes.

For example, Innova's flagship display in a stunning African Mahogany demonstrates kitchen cabinetry functionality such as pantry metal pull-out systems, a metal tambour appliance garage, custom Wine X, top lit cabinet boxes with energy efficient LED pucklighting, bi-fold and pockets doors, not to mention a magic corner, recycle pull-out, garbage and cleaner storage, as well as soft-close door and drawers.  The real magic of this display comes to life when one realizes that this kitchen display integrates Innova's new computer server and networking hardware, new greener laser printer/copier/fax machine with double sided printing, as well as their full colour CAD printer.

The showroom design centre also displays an armoire that doubles as Innova's catalog library, a modern second kitchen display in an environmentally green contemporary Maple Stria that demonstrates three types of cabinet door lifts and multiple drawer styles and solutions, a display island that houses two desk stations and an integrated presentation space, an antique style hutch display that holds wood finish samples, and a display that houses door samples as well as serving as a station for fabrics.

Once the functional requirements for the new showroom / office were met, Paul and Lee faced the difficult job of selecting materials and finishes that would not only demonstrate a wide variety of possible finishes but would also coordinate with one another.  The result is a sophisticated mix of finishes such as African Mahogany, American Cherry in a custom finish, Walnut, Heirloom Cherry in a Black aged finish, environmentally green finishes such as engineered Maple Strias and bamboo, as well as countertops materials in engineered stones, granite, marble, butcher block and glass.

The result?  A space which uses a fraction of the footprint and energy of their original offices, that feels large and spacious while crammed full of design surprises, and a space that demonstrates the power of superior interior design and renovation.  Looking to book your design/renovation appointment?  Paul and Lee can be reached at 604-676-1603, at their new design centre located at  5739 Collingwood Street in Vancouver, www.innovakitchens.com.
