Credit Card Rates Hold at Slightly More Than 14%

Vicki Rolens, Managing Director of the Federation of American Consumers (FACT), reports that credit card rates are, on national average, holding at 14.15%.
“There is” she says, “tremendous variance in rates, depending upon which issuer you choose, what type of card you have, and your credit rating.”
Rolens says that some low-interest cards for persons with a good credit rating can be beneath 12%, while instant-approval cards or cards for persons with bad credit can range from some 16% to 21%.
One possible “plus” to the high interest rates, she adds, may be a pullback in consumer use.“According to the Federal Reserve, credit card use levels are falling. One can assume that at least part of the reason is the high interest which the consumer must pay.”
How damaging is a high interest rate to a consumer’s budget? Rolens gives an example: “Let’s say that you have ,000 in credit card debt, that your interest rate is 14.15%, that you cancel the card today and make payments of a month. It will take you nearly 11 years — 130 months, to be exact! — to pay off your balance. Even worse …
“If you can afford to pay only per month, then you will never erase the balance — your payments won’t be sufficient to cover the accumulated interest.”
What to do if you’re in a credit card “hole”?
A common solution is to take a bill-consolidation or home-equity loan to pay off those pricey credit card balances.
“Another idea,” say Rolens, “is to gather all your cards and make a list, including what you owe, the current interest rate, and the phone number for each card. Call each company and request a lower interest rate, asking for a supervisor if the representative who answers your call isn’t helpful.
“Then, transfer your balances from the card or cards with the highest rates to the card or cards with the lowest rates. You might even consider applying for a new credit card if it offers 0% APR on balance transfers and your present credit card companies don’t.”
Rolens points out that FACT is not in the business of offering financial advice. “We try to point out money problems and offer possible solutions, but we urge consumers to seek help from trusted professionals in approaching any financial needs or difficulties they may have or encounter.”

Starting last week, Downtown Los Angeles residents can now pick up a free DTLA Resident Card that will get them discounts at more than 30 local businesses, including restaurants at L.A. LIVE, The Omni and Biltmore Hotels, the Patina Group of Restaurants and the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
The card, part of AP Consulting LA’s DTLA Resident Program, will extend special rewards like exclusive happy hours, free dishes, and discounted hotel stays to loyal neighborhood customers.
Registrations began on Thursday, May 13th, at LA Cafe in Historic Downtown (639 S. Spring St.) and continued throughout the week. This week registration will move to the South Park Starbucks at 11th and Grand and continue this Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11am – 5pm.
“Over the upcoming weeks we’ll be scheduling times in each of downtown’s neighborhoods to give all residents a chance to get their photo taken and sign up,” said AP Consulting LA founder and long-time downtowner Josh Gray-Emmer. “There are almost 50,000 people living in DTLA and we want to help them connect to their neighborhood businesses.”

In 2002, the Government of Canada passed the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act as its new immigration law. The new Act included the creation of the Canadian "Permanent Resident Card (also known as PR Card). This card replaced the old document known as "Record of Landing". The new card is a wallet-size card with security features difficult to forge.
There appears to be confusion about what the PR card represents. It is important that permanent residents, especially recently landed immigrants, be clear on what the PR card means before traveling anywhere.
The Permanent Resident Card is an identity document that indicates that the cardholder is a permanent resident of Canada. For example, the card can be presented at provincial offices to sign up for government programs such as healthcare. The PR card is not a valid travel document. It cannot be used to enter another country. It can be used as a valid identity document to foreign authorities but it will not allow entry to a country. On the other hand, as of December 30, 2003, all permanent residents who enter Canada by land, air or sea through a commercial carrier must present their PR Card at the port of entry. If the person does not present the PR card at the port of entry, he or she will not be allowed entry and will have to receive a special permit to enter Canada. Any permanent residents who are outside of Canada and no longer have a valid Permanent Resident Card must obtain a travel document in order enter Canada. An application for a travel document can be made at a Canada visa office. New or replacement PR cards can only be applied for and issued in Canada. Canadian Embassies or Consulates do not have the authority to process PR Card applications.
To apply for a new PR Card, an application form must be completed and a fee of CDN applies. Supporting documents must be submitted, such as a Landing Record. The application can be submitted directly to Citizenship and Immigration Canada or through immigration consulting firms like Immigroup. However, if one has lost their card or needs one on an urgent or expedited basis, it is recommendable that one consult with immigration firms like Immigroup that specializes in these services.
